Physician Assistants may choose to participate in a formal clinical residency or fellowship postgraduate program after they have completed their initial physician assistant education.  This specialty training is not required for PAs to provide medical care in primary or specialty medical care settings.  Some PAs elect to obtain additional training to strengthen their clinical background.

Residency programs range from 12 to 18 months in length and generally accept only one or two candidates a year.

A number of PA Post-graduate programs are available nationally and include areas within the following clinical specialties:

Acute Care Medicine

Neonatology
Neurosurgery
Ob/GYN
Oncology
